BRINGING RURAL COMMUNITIES TOGETHER THROUGH ART.
IN A BID TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY PRIDE ACROSS NEW ZEALAND, FARMLANDS HAS PARTNERED WITH WORLD-FAMOUS BAY OF PLENTY ARTIST GRAHAM HOETE (KNOWN AS MR G) TO PAINT LOCALLY-INSPIRED MURALS ON 15 FARMLANDS BUILDINGS NATIONWIDE THIS YEAR.
It was a serendipitous discovery that Farmlands staff found Hoete and his enormous talent. Last year, he made headlines with his massive murals of Kiwi NBA superstar Steven Adams (unveiled in downtown Oklahoma City) and of Prince, in the singer’s hometown of Chanhassen, Minnesota. “When we saw Graham perform a bone chilling haka to thousands of Minnesota locals and Prince fans,” says Farmlands Chief Executive, Peter Reidie, “we knew instantly we had to get in touch.”
Now the world-famous photorealist will tour the length of New Zealand in his largest project to date called HeART of the Community.
Hoete says the mana of his work will be in ensuring the community’s connection to the wairua of their land shines through in each one of the murals.
“Rural workers and everybody on its periphery work their knuckles to the bone everyday. It’s tough, bone grinding work, day in day out, and it’s not glamorous. It brings me great joy to provide respite and happiness by doing what I love most: making art. It is humbling to be received by these towns to learn about their histories and stories, and capture their hearts and souls in my murals, for everybody to enjoy.
